Flaxseed, Garbanzo Bean Flour, and Quinoa, Oh My!
Crushed Flaxseed is rich in Omega Fatty acids for a softer, shinier coat. Flax seed also contains alpha-linoleic acid which is an anti-inflammatory and helps the immune system.
Garbanzo Bean Flour, (made from Chick Peas), is an easily digestible protein and is an excellent source of fiber, folic acid, potassium, iron, magnesium, copper, zinc, phosphorus, thiamine, niacin, vitamin B6 and calcium.
Quinoa Flour, made from quinoa seeds, is a 'complete' protein as it contains 9 amino acids. Quinoa Flour also contains vitamins B12 and E, calcium and iron.
Buckwheat Flour
Despite it's name, Buckwheat is not wheat, nor is it a grain. Buckwheat flour is made from crushed Buckwheat fruit seeds. Buckwheat is a very low glycemic food so it doesn't spike blood sugar levels when eaten, it improves blood flow and is a good source of calcium and protein. Buckwheat flour contains higher levels of antioxidants, B vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium than Wheat based flour, and dogs love the nutlike flavor. Buckwheat is high in complex carbohydrates, potassium, phosphorous, iron, calcium, protein, and fiber. It contains twice the amount of B vitamins as wheat flour.
At Salty Dog Barkery, we bake with buckwheat flour from Bouchard Family Farm in Maine. This buckwheat has tiny white flowers and is known as silver hulled buckwheat. This variety of Buckwheat only grows in Canada and Northern Maine and produces a flour with a beautiful white texture.
Almond Meal
Named 'meal' instead of 'flour', almond meal is a flour made from whole almonds with skins giving it a courser texture and darker color. Almond meal contains the same nutrients as whole almonds. Almonds are an excellent source of Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that supports immune function.
